Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) provides individuals with an ability to communicate in methods other than spoken language such as sign language, pointing, or using low-tech and high-tech communication devices.

Parents commonly fear that if their child starts using a communication device or sign language to communicate that doing so will hinder their chances at verbally communicating, when in fact just the opposite is true! Communication devices are often used to bridge the communication gap for those that have a language delay and/or unintelligible articulation.

It can be very frustrating for children (and adults) with communicative intent to try to communicate their wants and needs but are not understood by their caregivers or peers. It can be equally frustrating for families who do not know how to meet their loved one’s needs.

Everyone deserves the ability to communicate, no matter the age or reason. Communication is powerful. Once a child makes the connection that words hold meaning, their motivation to use their device and/or produce spoken language increases significantly. When children are able to communicate more effectively, meltdowns and frustrations significantly decrease.

AAC devices can be especially beneficial for children and adults who have difficulty expressing themselves following a traumatic brain injury or stroke.

Even though Optimal Therapy Solutions, LLC is not currently in network with any insurance companies, our company works with your insurance company to try and get your child’s device fully or partially funded.
